One of the landmarks of Berlin the Berlin city gate at the western end of the street Unter den Linden; built between 1788-91 by C. G. Langhans: 62 m wide, 11 m deep, 20 m high; carries a 5m high quadriga, the carriage of the Goddess of victory Victoria, pulled by four horses. From 1961 it was blocked off for transit traffic due to the building of the Berlin Wall, and since then personified a symbol of the separation of Germany and Berlin.
