Demokratie Jetzt (DJ) (Democracy Now)
Citizens movement of the opposition, founded in 1989 in the GDR; it originated from the closely church-related "Initiative of renunciation of practical implementation and the principle of demarcation". The main initiators were Hans-Jürgen Fischbeck, Wolfgang Ullmann, Konrad Weiß. After the political changeover, Demokratie Jetzt supported a basic democracy, refuted the party state and a rapid reunification of Germany; Demokratie Jetzt wanted to help Socialism which they hoped to be able to maintain as an alternative to the "Western Consumer Society" gain its "true" form by means of democracy.
In 1990, Demokratie Jetzt formed the election coalition Bündnis 90 (Alliance 90) with the Neue Forum ( New Forum) and the Initiative for Peace and Human Rights.
